Prince Harry Visits Newham Young People
The session run by Newham councils leisure trust activeNewham is a part of a national scheme, the Fit and Fed initiative, that will reach 12,000 young people throughout the summer.
Prince Harry surprised young people in newham today when he swung by a summer holiday activity session in East Ham, run by Newham Council’s leisure trust activeNewham and its partner organisation Fight for Peace.
Prince Harry joined in some of the activities which include football, tennis, cricket and other multi-sport activities and then he met coaches who explained to him more about the scheme.
Launched in July 2017, Fit and Fed is a response to the issue of hunger in the holidays, engaging children and young people aged between five and 14 in a range of sports and activities.
The scheme is set to operate in 100 disadvantaged neighbourhoods across the country this summer, and in 2017 aims to help 12,000 children and young people.
Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, said “It was fantastic to be able to welcome Prince Harry to Newham and show him the great work taking place to help our young people lead healthy and active lives.”
Families nationwide are struggling financially, this can be the hardest in holiday time when food bills can increase £30 – £40, and there is no money left over for sport either with low income families spending £2 a week on sport.
“Newham is among the country’s most deprived areas and the Fit and Fed campaign mirrors our commitment to encourage and help young people not just to get active but to also have a nutritious meal.” added Sir Robin.
