Stratford Town Center Transformation Begins
A project between Newham Council and Transport for London has begun with the aim of transforming Stratford Town Centre making it a safer place.
The ground-breaking ceremony in Theatre Square marked the start of the work. The ceremony was attended by Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, Dr Will Norman, the Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner and Graham Nash, TfL’s Head of Borough Projects and Programmes.
Graham Nash, said: “We’re pleased to have worked with Newham Council on this transformative scheme which will see Stratford town centre become more attractive, accessible and people-friendly in line with the Mayor of London’s Healthy Streets Approach. We’d advise people who regularly travel through the area to plan their journeys ahead while this work takes place.”
The last two years have been spent making plans for the works in consultation with local residents and businesses and will be completed in stages between now and spring 2019, so their will be no restriction to the town centre.
New lighting and pavements are expected to be completed as earlier as the end of October, some areas will see improvements quickly including greenery and seating areas with work already starting on Great Eastern Road and Broadway for new crossings.
After completion the current one way system will have been completely replaced by a two way traffic system, pavements will be widened and new public spaces with plants and trees will be added.
Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of Newham, said: “I am excited to see work start on this historic scheme which will create a safer and more attractive town centre for everyone to enjoy. Residents have told us they want to see these changes to improve the safety for everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike. This new system will allow for a better flow of traffic and reduce accidents in the area. Once complete, in two years time, the whole area will have a new greener, fresher look and feel as well as being safer for everyone.”
The changes will be welcomed from residents and visitors alike as this particular part of Stratford has been left behind slightly in the revamp surrounding the olympics and construction of the now infamous Westfield shopping centre.
