Spider-Man Homecoming
★★★★
It is two months after Spider-Man has completed his first mission with the Avengers, or at least half of them, and he is desperate to go on another one. Fifteen year old Peter Parker (Tom Holland) living at home with Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) goes out after every school day helping local residents with such important tasks as giving directions. Telling his slightly rejected friends that he’s at his STARK internship, in fact he even misses out on school activities to keep it up.
One night he witnesses an ATM robbery where the criminals involved have some high tech out of this world technology. He tries to tell Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) about it but as usual he doesn’t really listen, dejected he takes up the trail himself, leading to a gang run by Adrian Toomes (Micheal Keaton). In his haste to foil the gangs plans he finds himself on the wrong side of Iron Man, puts others in peril and there are some unusual revelations too giving us some great twists and turns in the plot line.
Tom holland could quite possibly be the best Spider-Man yet as the real teenager plays the role in a funny and relatable way with ease. The story is clever and entertaining and not at all the disaster I thought yet another Spider-Man reboot would be, it brings to life the spirit of the original comics well, whilst simultaneously hinting at another comic series Damage Control.
If you were afraid it would be yet another Avengers movie you were wrong, the injection of Tony Starks Iron Man into the mix does not ruin Spider-Man previously well established world. The director, John Watts, did an excellent job as the performance he gets from this young cast is on point, he even throws in a wonderfully executed ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ joke.
All in all if your looking for a quirky fun comic book movie with a good old fashioned villain whose in it for the money in oppose to being criminally insane, then this is the movie for you. As for your kids it could be the movie for them too; though you should be aware there is several incidences of foul language, sexual references (including one about porn) and some suggested underage drinking.
