Fly tipper fined for dumping commercial waste
Grant Hover of Hilda Road, Canning Town, was fined £1000 after being found guilty last week of dumping commercial and household wastes on March 9th in Wharfside Road, Canning Town.
Newham council used CCTV to track down 31 year old Hover, who claimed a wheelie bin of rubbish fell off his van when he stopped to urinate.
The CCTV cameras caught him dumping the waste and his employer was contacted, identifying Hover as the driver. He was interviewed, initially acknowledging he had dumped the rubbish, he then changed his story to say it had fallen off the van.
Councillor Ian Corbett, mayoral advisor for environment and leisure, said: “Fly tippers blight the lives of our residents who have asked us to use CCTV cameras, as in this case, to track down the perpetrators who ruin the look of our streets and encourage vermin to breed. Our enforcement teams strive to track down these inconsiderate individuals and make them pay for the inconvenience and disruption they have caused to the taxpayer”
On Wednesday 20th August Hover was tried in his absence at Thames Magistrates’ Court, where evidence including the CCTV, photographs and Hovers own statement were seen. The Magistrates found him guilty and due to the industrial nature of the rubbish fined him £1000, ordering him to pay £240 in costs to the council and a £100 victim surcharge within 28 days.
Newham council are pleased with the outcome and Corbett said: “We hope this prosecution sends a message to opportunists who consider dumping their rubbish on our streets that we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour, we will track you down and we will make you pay.”
