NCTJ Seminar to See Industry Discuss Diversity and Inclusion in Journalism
As a Journalism Diversity Fund (JDF) recipient, I have been invited to join an audience of journalists, editors, and educators at the National Council for the Training of Journalists diversity in journalism seminar.
The NCTJ is partnering with Bloomberg as part of their support for the JDF, in fact, the seminar will be a part of the annual JDF celebratory event which sees students, trainees, sponsors and supporters celebrate the work of the fund. The fund has awarded 41 bursaries so far this year and all of the recipients are invited.
The event will be opened by Matthew A. Winkler, editor in chief emeritus of Bloomberg News, which he founded with Michael Bloomberg in 1990. It will be chaired by Abu Bundu-Kamara, NCTJ trustee and group diversity and inclusion specialist at Boeing. There will be a wonderful line up of amazing speakers who will form two panels giving their take in the discussions.
The first panel discussion will be ‘The Culture of Inclusion’ discussed by Pamela Hutchinson, head of diversity and inclusion, EMEA, Bloomberg LP; Tunde Ogungbesan, head of diversity, inclusion and succession, BBC; Hayley Pearce, reporter for The Argus in Brighton and former JDF recipient, and Mark Rice-Oxley, head of special projects at The Guardian.
The second panel discussion will be about recruitment, fair access, and retention in journalism debated by Pamela Hall, HR business partner for Sky Entertainment; Amar Mehta, reporter for Newsquest and former JDF recipient; Abbie Scott, deputy managing editor at the Financial Times, and Charlene White, newsroom anchor, ITN.
After the panel discussions, Gina Miller, co-founder of SCM Direct, joined by Jacqueline Simmons, executive editor for global business at Bloomberg News, will give a ‘Fireside talk’ on “The importance of raising your voice to influence change”
This will all be fit into the morning and is bound to give all the attendees pause for thought and with all that information to take in, they’ll be glad of the Celebratory Lunch Reception that follows. In the afternoon the JDF will present the lucky recipients of the Claire Prosser and Thomas Read bursaries before the event comes to a close.
Attendance is by invitation only, however if you have an interest in diversity in journalism and would like to attend, please contact Cecilia Judmann at cecilia.judmann@nctj.com as soon as possible.
