The Maine at KOKO London
Last night The Maine blew us all away with an energy filled set, as they stopped by Camden promoting their most recent album ‘Lovely Little Lonely’, fresh off of a huge world tour. Speaking of huge this was the bands biggest ever headlining show playing to nearly 1500 fans of all ages, new and old.
This show was an early one, doors were at 6pm so the crowd trickled in and filled out the venue throughout the support acts sets, it’s no surprise that those of us with jobs were not amongst the hoards of Emo kids who were there since morning or later queuing down the street.
The support bands were 8123 family Technicolours and a band I had not heard of yet Night Riots but the fans that did make it in early gave them a massive welcome by dancing along and cheering in all the right places!
The crowed were hyped with anticipation and despite the early start it felt like they had been waiting forever, then with their usual finesse and class the band walked out to massive cheers and they kicked straight in with ‘Black Butterflies and Deja Vu’ from ‘Lovely Little Lonely’
I had seen the band just a few months earlier in March at the Electric Ballroom but I honestly think you can never see too much of The Maine, they had promised they would return with a ‘Lovely Little Lonely’ tour and they kept their word.
The Maine are one of my all time favourite bands I have been following their journey for 10 years since they formed in 2007, so its with great joy that I get to see them play a few old classics. For the band this show was a little journey in itself knocking out all their greatest hits so far with of course a heavy injection of new songs.
A particular favourite moment of mine was when they played Blurs infamous ‘Song 2′ with John stating “this must be an anthem here”, but the person I was with didn’t know it. I’m sure it was a sign of my age being that I’m of the ‘Blur vs Oasis argument’ generation.
The band from Tempe, Arizona make it clear they love the UK, as expected they told the story of english girls and the crowd went wild being as how maybe 50% of them were english girls!
Alas at just 9:45 it was time to go home and all the fun and frolics were over, the crowd trickled out with smiles on their faces having had an excellent night, even if it was over too soon.
